About Hooked On Nature

Hi, I am Tom and I am totally Hooked On Nature!

 The mission of my business Hooked On Nature is to get people back into nature, and hooked on unlocking the stories of wildlife, plants and fungi. I truely believe the more people connecting to the nature in the garden, the roadside reserve or the national park, the better understanding they will have and the more people will want and know how to conserve it.

Obviously I am playing on the fact that I have “Hook” for a prosthetic right hand, but from as early as I can remember I’ve always been interested in the natural world. I was the kid that came to school with many jars to the distress of my teachers, containing characters like Huntsman Spiders, Wood Cockroaches, Snails, Ants, Centipedes and Frogs, not to mention the frequent Blue Tongue Lizard scampering in my backpack. My mum was always scared to go through my bag!

As I grew older my intrigue and wonder turned to some of the perceived less desirable critters, like red bellied black snakes and diamond pythons, and for a long time I had a posse of young free-flying hand raised magpies occupying my parents back veranda. However, it isn't just the critters that held my attention, I've also always loved plants. My family tells stories of me as a child taking cuttings of plants and popping them in pots hoping they would grow, and now I’m an avid gardener trying to create perfect homes for wildlife around my home, or should I say “HABITAT”.

I guess I would say that I have never grown up, because I am still out climbing trees, rolling over old logs and exploring the bush on quest of discovering nature. I’ve followed my passion into my professional life and now work as an Ecologist and I want to share my passion with the world!
